SMART LOCKS
Smart locks are a great way to make your home more convenient to access for residents, guests and service people.

Technology has come a long way - and after years of trial and error, I'm happy to say that there's a smart lock I can actually recommend!

The Schlage Encode Plus is a smart lock which has all the bells and whistles and is actually reliable.
Quick Tutorial of the main features of the smart lock
Key features:

Enter your home in the following ways,
-
input your pin (4-8 digits long) - you can set a different code for every person (up to 100 unique pins) and delete them at any point in time. Say you have a cleaning person, a dog walker and a guest; they can each have a code of their own so you can be notified whenever they enter your home.
-
Lock and Unlock remotely through the app on your phone. You can also see the current status of the lock in case you left the house and cannot remember if you locked the door!

-
If you have an iPhone or an Apple Watch, you can simply “tap” (hold your device to the lock) to unlock the door. I have had this on my house for the past two years and absolutely LOVE it!
-
You can also tell your phone to lock/unlock your door! (for example “Siri/Google/Alexa, unlock the front door”)
-
Physical key - you can always use the actual key to lock/unlock, even if the batteries are dead.
Lock takes 4xAA batteries, which usually last around 1 year (varies depending on use).
There are plenty of different smart lock manufacturers and models out there, many of which have hundreds of online reviews.
I have found that most products have amazing online reviews, even though they fail constantly and are super easy to hack/bypass.
I recommend and work with only one smartlock model which has two versions - "Schlage Encode" and "Schlage Encode Plus". Both are similar, but the “plus” version allows the “tap” feature, so if you’re an iPhone user I recommend spending a few extra bucks for that.

Security:
As far as hacking is concerned - the Schlage Encode Plus is incredibly secure.
Bad news is that like most others, this lock is also susceptible to "Lock Bumping".
The good news is that the key cylinder (key hole) can be upgraded to a high security type so it becomes pick, bump and drill resistant.
Also, this will prevent anyone else from being able to duplicate your key.

This smart lock is a good fit for many doors, but not all (depending on your lock setup).
